CBTC2 Phase 3 Launch
13 May 2009
An official opening ceremony has taken place for a centre that supports Cardiff’s dynamic and innovative technology companies, celebrating completion of the third phase of development.
As the capital’s leading business location for innovative enterprises, Cardiff Business Technology Centre (CBTC) provides quality accommodation and easy access to business support services. The centre has been developed at Capital Business Park in Wentloog by Cardiff Council with funding from the
European Union and Welsh Assembly Government.
The third phase, which makes a further 10,000 sq ft of accommodation available, was officially opened by Councillor Neil McEvoy, Cardiff Council’s deputy leader, with responsibility for economic development, and chairman of CBTC. McEvoy said: "There is now 30,000 sq ft of accommodation as part of CBTC and the facilities are well-managed, offering an attractive location for business."

The first tenant in the new phase is Aytel Systems, which specialises in information technology systems. The company is working with the council to develop a new data centre to attract new and blue chip companies.
Capital Business Park, developed by J.R Smart, is one of the most successful sites in Wales and is home to more than 50 companies employing approximately 1,000 people. CBTC was originally established in 1988,
near Cardiff University. Subsequently, CBTC2 was developed in two units, the first in 1996 and completed in 2000.
Today, with the third phase of CBTC in place, the centres provide premises for numerous companies within the ICT and technology sectors and continue to promote Cardiff for value-added high-technology businesses. Support for CBTC tenants is provided by the council with further input from Cardiff University, the Welsh Assembly Government and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff.
McEvoy said the "the centre’s main role is to create an environment that is attractive to start-ups and help develop them into successful enterprises. During the current economic downturn the council is enhancing its support for innovative businesses in facilities such as CBTC3 to ensure new employment
opportunities are available for local people".
EXPANDING CARDIFF ICT SOLUTIONS SPECIALIST MOVES INTO CBTC3
Cardiff technology company Aytel Systems has become the first tenant to move into new high-tech offices in CBTC3 at Capital Business Park, Wentloog.
The move is part of Aytel’s continuing growth strategy to develop a bespoke, state-of-the-art Server Room with improved design and support facilities, which gives the company a strong USP and edge for attracting new independent and blue chip clients.
CBTC3 is now home to Aytel’s highly skilled and experienced technical team, support staff and the Server Room. This new technology hub will enhance Aytel’s overall service provision of effective and cost-efficient ICT solutions,
encompassing consultancy, design and build, internal and external comms, maintenance and technical support.
Working closely with Cardiff Council, Aytel now offers existing and new CBTC2 tenants a high-tech support service, complementing the CBTC3 concept of bringing innovative applications of science and technology to the
market. Aytel also offers this high-tech facility to other businesses located on Capital Business Park, giving them localised data centre and disaster recovery capability.
Pete Patel, founder and managing director of Aytel, said: "Having superb facilities such as these with excellent communication links acts as a great platform from which to push Aytel’s growth strategy. We are extremely grateful to the council, which has been most helpful and flexible in accommodating our needs."
Councillor McEvoy said: "It is wonderful to see Aytel Systems locate within the CBTC3 development so soon after completion. The type of services the company is offering our tenants within CBTC will no doubt become much sought after, including other companies located at Capital Business Park."
